There are different types of roller shutters on the market in Adelaide and when looking into shutters it can get very confusing. There a lot of companies who use the same materials for their roller shutters in Adelaide but they market or advertise them differently so that the consumer feels they have something that the others don’t. There’s also a lot of information from non roller shutter companies giving their advice on the internet that’s not quote right or they have googled their information from overseas.

The thing to think about when looking into roller shutters is, what purpose do you personally need them for. Are you looking for protection from the heat, the cold, noise reduction or privacy for your home. Do you need them because you live in a high or low bushfire zone? are you looking for security for a building or shop front. We have been in the roller shutter industry for over 35 years here in Adelaide and back in the day there were different types of roller shutters with big differences between products & companies that sold them.

6 Different types of roller shutters

There is basically 5 different type’s of slat’s for roller shutters in Adelaide all offering something slightly different to the consumer based on what you need the roller shutter to do. So how do you know what is the right product for you? Firstly think about what are the main reasons you need the roller shutter. There is a residential product available that has a curved slat and then there is a flat slat.

Residential Slat –
  • Curved slat –
  • The curved slat is the most widely used for residential roller shutters in Adelaide the slat depending on the manufacturer it is bought from ranges from 8.5mm to 9mm thick.  It can be operated via a number of options including a spring, a winding manual operation, a rechargeable battery unit or a 240 Volt electric shutter.
  • These operating options also have options EG: remote control.
  • The curved slat is housed in a head box at the top of the window which range in size depending on the finished height of the roller shutter. The sizes available range from a standard 165mm box, 180mm box ,  205mm box or a 230mm box which all come in a range of on trend colours.
  • The Curved slat’s are made from Aluminium and are all filled with a foam to add strength and insulation properties. This foam is injected in during the roll forming process.
  • The paint between the products are visibly different to the eye, there are 2 curved slat’s that are finished off well and the paint has a low sheen, looks new and easy to clean. The other slat is visibly dull to look at, it can look like it has been in the sun for a while and lost its lustre. When all the slats are next to each other its very easy to pick this one out.
  • Most companies in Adelaide will use the standard guides or runners for the curved slat – these guides are 53mm wide by  22mm in depth.
  • The different types of roller shutters available is not the only thing to consider between companies. using the curved slat can also be the brand of re chargeable battery used or the motors that they are installing into the shutters. Of course the obvious difference to think about also is the quality of tradesmen used for the install.
  • Flat slat –
  • The flat slat is used by a few companies on the market in Adelaide the slat comes in 3 different thickness. 7.5mm, 8mm and 9mm. It can be operated via a number of options also just like the curved slat. These options include the manual operation, rechargeable battery and 240V electric motor options.
